Sexuality touches the ‘innermost realms of our being’.1 Nonetheless, it
is not solely biological or natural; rather it is much influenced by socially
constructed behaviours, beliefs, norms, values, perceptions and
misperceptions. Sexuality plays a crucial role in determining sociopolitical
structures. Violence, social exclusion, humiliation, legal
prosecution, excommunication and the threat of these acts are
commonly used as a tool to control and regulate one’s sexuality.
